1. Bird By Bird by Anne Lamott.

This great book is a writer’s personal account of their approach to writing. It not only covers the usual techniques of writing that we are looking for but also covers a writer’s frame of mind, dealing with those pesky internal voices that and ways of looking around for inspiration.

2. Solutions for Writers by Sol Stein.

This book largely focuses on techniques and methods of writing a good book that you can pick up and use. There is a very useful section on revision (that part of the process is a personal hatred of mine) and honing that loose first draft. Each method Stein proposes is well illustrated with examples.

3. On Writing by Stephen King.

This book is flat-out great, both as a guide and as a good read about a hugely successful and popular writer. The first section, C.V. is a no-nonsense account of how and why Stephen King became a writer all told in his own inimitable style. Toolbox, deals with the skills and implements a writer uses to create. This is all laid out in a straightforward manner for the reader, breaking it down in a brutally honest fashion. Don’t miss the final pages, which include a reading list, and a fascinating re-drafting example of his story 1408.

So there’s a small sample and plenty of reading for anyone interested in discovering more about writing. Enjoy!
